AAA or a Local Tow Truck in Twentynine Palms? How to Decide When You Break Down on Highway 62
AAA or a Local Tow Truck in Twentynine Palms? How to Decide When You Break Down on Highway 62

You're parked on a dirt shoulder a few miles from Wonder Valley, the sun has dropped behind the hills, and your phone has one bar. You have a roadside plan, so you open the app. Then you notice the line about towing limits and glance at the map. The nearest repair shop is a long drive away.
That's the decision this post is about. Neither choice is wrong. But what your plan covers, and how far it stretches out here, changes which call makes sense.
Start with what your plan actually covers
Coverage varies by club and tier, so check yours. For the Automobile Club of Southern California, AAA's own benefit chart lists:
- Classic: towing up to 7 driving miles.
- Plus: up to 100 miles per service call.
- Premier: one tow of up to 200 miles per household per membership year, and up to 100 miles on the other tows.
Members also get four service calls per membership year, according to AAA. Past your tier's limit, AAA says a service charge applies, and the chart notes that service is generally provided by independent service providers. If you carry roadside coverage through your auto insurer or a car manufacturer, it has its own mileage limit, so check that policy too. Look at the number before you need it.
Why 7 miles goes fast in the Morongo Basin
In a city, 7 miles gets you to a shop. Out here it often doesn't. From a trailhead near Joshua Tree National Park, a pullout on SR-62, or a road in Wonder Valley, the nearest full-service shop can be in Yucca Valley or the Coachella Valley, a very different distance. A tow that starts under your plan can end with a charge for the extra miles.
California law adds one more detail. In the consumer notice every tow company has to provide under Vehicle Code §22651.07, owner's-request tows are priced by mutual agreement between you and the tow company, or by whatever agreements exist between your motor club and the provider it uses. Our guide to what a California tow invoice must show walks through the rest.
When your plan makes sense
- The tow fits inside your limit, or most of it does.
- You're near a paved road and can safely wait.
- You still have service calls left for the membership year.
- You're not in a rush. If the ETA works for you, the covered portion saves real money.
When a local tow company makes sense
- Your tow will run past your plan's miles, or you've used up your service calls.
- You're remote or it's after dark. A dispatcher based in town knows the roads, the washes, and the cell dead zones.
- Your vehicle needs a flatbed, like an all-wheel-drive car, an EV, or a motorcycle. See our guides to EV towing in Joshua Tree and motorcycle towing.
- You're stuck in sand or off the pavement. Read our off-road winch-out guide, and ask your plan whether it covers off-road recovery at all.
- You don't have a plan, or you want a direct line to someone local.
A middle path
You don't have to decide blind. Call a local company for a rate and an ETA, then compare that with what your plan offers. Before you pay a local tower out of pocket, ask your club or insurer whether it reimburses a tow from a provider you chose, and what paperwork it needs. I couldn't verify a single rule for that, because it varies by plan, so ask first. Keep the itemized invoice either way.
Questions to ask whichever way you go
- How long until the truck arrives?
- Where will the vehicle be taken, and how far is it?
- How will it be towed, flatbed or wheel-lift?
- What will I pay beyond what my plan covers?
- Are there after-hours or mileage charges?
Questions drivers ask about this
Can I call a local tow company if my motor club's truck is far away?
You can arrange your own tow. Whether your plan reimburses it depends on your club's rules, so ask before you pay.
What happens if my tow runs past my plan's mileage?
Per AAA's benefit materials, a service charge applies for the extra miles, and service is generally provided by independent providers. Ask what the rate will be before the truck loads.
How many tows does AAA include?
AAA lists four service calls per membership year, with tow distance set by your tier.
